米国ではもうすぐ日本のお盆やお正月に相当すると思われる、
Thanksgiving Day/holidaysというホリデイシーズンに入ります。

（11月の第４木曜日、基本的に木曜日から日曜日まで4連休）　
毎年この時期になると、日本では滅多に見ることのない大きな七面鳥がアメリカ中のスーパーで大売り出しになりにぎわいます。

何時間もかけて作る大きな七面鳥の丸焼き、パンプキンパイ、甘酸っぱいクランベリーソースなどを囲んで、集ったみんなと楽しく歓談しながらいただきます。
この日ばかりは普段なかなか会えない人たちとのreunion（再会）を楽しむのです。

【Thanksgivingの起源】

1620年12月26日に、イギリスの清教徒団"ピルグリム・ファーザーズ"が、
イギリス教会の宗教弾圧を逃れ"メイフラワー号"でアメリカのマサチューセッツ州プリマスに到着しました。

上陸した年の冬は寒さがとても厳しく、さまざまな困難にも見舞われ、上陸当時100人程いた清教徒のほとんどが寒さや飢え、そして病気などによって命を落とし、生き残ったのはたったの50人位になってしまったのです。

生き残った人たちは、先住民であるネイティブ・アメリカン（インディアン）に狩猟や農耕を教わり、
春夏一生懸命働き、結果として大成功を納めました。

そして、秋の収穫時に教会に集い、会食を催して収穫を喜び、神に感謝を捧げたというわけです。
この席には、入植者の恩人であるインディアン達も招かれました。
インディアン達は、お礼に七面鳥や鹿の肉を持って来ました。
そして、清教徒の一団とインディアンたちは、3日間戸外のテーブルに食物を山と積んで、
神に感謝を捧げ、讃美歌を歌ったのです。

これがThanksgiving Dayの起源というわけです
