The new year is approaching quickly!
Yes, it's time to start thinking about New Year's resolutions.
When you make a resolution I highly recommend that you use the powerful word,【Intend/Intention】
For example,
This year, I 【intend to】 master English rather than I 【want to】 master English.
Do you FEEL the difference?
【英単語】
●New Year's resolutions=新年の志
●Intention= ～する意図［意思］があること。intentionは意図を表す一般的な言葉。
・That's not my intention at all. : 私にはそんなつもりは全くない。
〔考えている〕目的、腹づもり◆通例、intentions
・What are your real intentions? : 実のところどうするつもりだ？
※↑のように普通の日本の辞書には書いてあるのですが、
この言葉の本質的な意味にはいろいろ調べた結果、【Absolute commitment to your true self.】が含まれます。
イメージとしてはこの真の自分に対しての絶対的な約束は【unbreakable】 と覚えると良いかと思います。

このintentionという言葉の使い方を教えてくれたのは私が心から尊敬する女性で私のMentor/friendです。
彼女は50代の米国人女性で、若いころはペンタゴンやUS空軍で法廷弁護士として数々の実績を残し、結婚して子供が生まれると、引退して宇宙技術関連ＮＰＯでGeneral Counsel(総合弁護士)として、官民学を強力に結びつけるConnectorとして米国中を飛び回っていました。
千人規模の会議も彼女が指揮をとると、あっというまにオーガナイズされていきました。
どんなに恐そうな軍人さんであっても、彼女の言うことはみんな素直に言うことを聞いていました。
そんなSmooth operatorでSuper achiever (やり手）だけれども人間としての温かさを決して忘れない彼女が、よく使っていた言葉が、このIntentionでした。
そして、彼女が一番のお勧めの本の題名も「The power of intention」で、実際彼女はよく会話の中で、What's your intention to do this? Do you know what his intention is? My intention is to bring justice to the U.S. Congress...などなど。
メールにも、文書にも彼女は頻繁にこの【intend/intention】を使っています。
そして、彼女曰く、このPower of Intentionが一番生かされるのはそのIntentionがSelflessのときだと教えてくれました。
Self-centered でSelfishなIntentionとは次元の違うものを彼女は常に目指していました。
英語でコミュニケーションをしていて、このintend/intentionと言う言葉を自分が使うと、相手も自分も真剣になります。
まさに新年の志を表すのにぴったりの言葉であると思います。
