English Mania

Today, I would like to share some ideas on why two billion people around the world are trying to learn English. (Especially in China)

さすがは起業家、圧倒的な説得力です。　
私も自分の英語を学ぶ動機がさらに熱くなるのを感じました。
田舎での少女時代、自分自身も今の中国の人たちと同じく"I want to change my life" と強く思っていたことを思い出しました。

そして、英語を学ぶことによってその願いは確実に叶えられてきています。
生きるための職業を得るためというのはもちろんのことですが、英語で日本では得られない情報を読んだり、他国の人たちとコミュニケーションを深めることによって、これまで未知だった新しい領域が次々に明らかになっていくことは非常にエキサイティングなことです。
そして私にとって今や英語はJay Walker が指摘しているように、問題解決のための言語になりつつあります。

I want to find the solutions to the problems.
I want to know the truth for that purpose.
That's why I am learning English everyday.

Let's talk about manias.
Let's start with Beatle mania. ysterical teenagers, crying, screaming, pandemonium. Sports mania.  Deafening crowds.
All for one idea.
Get the ball in the net. Okay, religious mania.
There's rapture. There's weeping. There's visions.
Manias can be good.
Manias can be alarming.  Or manias can be deadly.
The world has a new mania.
A mania for learning English.
Listen as Chinese students practice their English  by screaming it.
Teacher: ... change my life!
Students: I will change my life.
T: I don't want to let my parents down.
S: I don't want to let my parents down.
T: I don't ever want to let my country down.
S: I don't ever want to let my country down.
T: Most importantly ... S: Most importantly ...

T: I don't want to let myself down.
S: I don't want to let myself down.
Jay Walker: How many people are trying to learn English worldwide?
Two billion of them.
Students: A t-shirt. A dress.
JW: In Latin America, in India, in Southeast Asia,  and most of all in China.
If you are a Chinese student you start learning English in the third grade, by law.
That's why this year China will become the world's largest English speaking country. (Laughter)
Why English? In a single word: Opportunity.
Opportunity for a better life, a job,  to be able to pay for school, or put better food on the table.
Imagine a student taking a giant test for three full days.
Her score on this one test literally determines her future.
She studies 12 hours a day  for three years to prepare.
25 percent of her grade is based on English.
It's called the Gaokao.
And 80 million high school Chinese students have already taken this grueling test.
The intensity to learn English  is almost unimaginable.
Unless you witness it.
Teacher: Perfect! Students: Perfect!
T: Perfect! S: Perfect! T: I want to speak perfect English.
S: I want to speak perfect English.
T: I want to speak -- S: I want to speak --
T: perfect English. S: perfect English.
T: I want to change my life!
S: I want to change my life!
JW: So is English mania good or bad?
Is English a tsunami, washing away  other languages?
Not likely.
English is the world's second language. 
Your native language is your life.
But with English you can become part of a wider conversation.
A global conversation about global problems.
Like climate change or poverty.
Or hunger or disease.
The world has other universal languages.
Mathematics is the language of science.
Music is the language of emotions.
And now English is becoming the language of problem solving.
Not because America is pushing it.
But because the world is pulling it.
So English mania is a turning point.
Like the harnessing of electricity in our cities, or the fall of the Berlin Wall,  English represents hope
A future where the world has a common language to solve its common problems.

マニア（熱狂）についてお話しましょう
まずは、ビートルズマニア   狂乱する10代の若者達... 
叫び、悲鳴をあげ、混乱の渦です #>  スポーツマニア  耳をつんざく群衆の歓声
皆考えている事は1つ　ボールをネットに入れる事 
そして、宗教マニア   歓喜、そして涙、   世界観があります   マニアは良い事をもたらしたり、   恐怖をあおったり   または、命取りになることもあります
世界には新しいマニアが出現しました
英語勉強マニアです  叫びながら行う中国人学生による英語の練習を 
聞いてみてください
先生：「..人生を変えます！」
生徒：「私は人生を変えます」
先生：「私は両親を悲しませたくありません」
生徒：「私は両親を悲しませたくありません」
先生：「私は決して国の期待を裏切ったりはしません」
生徒：「私は決して国の期待を裏切ったりはしません」
先生：「なによりも」...　
生徒：「なによりも」...
先生：「私自身を失望させたくありません」
生徒：「私自身を失望させたくありません」

JW：世界中でどれぐらいの人達が英語を学んでいるのでしょうか？
 20億人です
生徒：「Ｔシャツ　ドレス」
JW：ラテンアメリカで、  インドで、東南アジアで、   そして極めつけは中国で   あなたが中国人の学生であれば  3年生から英語を習い始めます、法律により   そして今年   中国は世界で最も英語を話す人が多い国になりました   （笑い）   何故英語なのか？
一言で言えば「機会」です
より良い生活、より良い職を得るための機会  学費を払える様になるため、より良いものを食べ為の機会です   ある学生が丸3日かけて試験を受けるところを想像してください
この試験の成績により  文字通り彼女の将来は決まるのです
彼女は1日12時間勉強し  3年間かけて準備します
彼女の成績の25%は英語によるものです  これは「高考 (Gaokao)」と呼ばれるもので、
8000万人にものぼる中国人の学生が   この厳しい試験を受けました
英語を学ぶ熱中ぶりは   それを見ない限り想像しがたいものです

先生：「完璧！」　生徒：「完璧！」
先生：「完璧！」　生徒：「完璧！」
先生：「私は完璧な英語を話したい」生徒：「私は完璧な英語を話したい」
先生：「私は話したい..」　生徒：「私は話したい..」
先生：「完璧な英語を」　生徒：「完璧な英語を」
先生：「私は人生を変えたい！」
生徒：「私は人生を変えたい！」

JW：それで英語マニアは良いのか、悪いのか？
英語は他の言語を洗い流してしまう  津波なのか？
そうでは無いでしょう  英語は世界中で使われる外国語です
あなたの母語はあなたの人生です
しかし英語により、より大きな会話に参加できる様になります
世界規模の問題を話し合う世界規模の会話   気候変動や貧困など
または飢えや病気   世界は他にも普遍的な言語があります
数学は科学での言語ですし   音楽は感情の言語です
そして英語は今、問題解決の為の言語になろうとしています
アメリカが後押ししているからではなく、   世界がそれを求めているからです
英語マニアというのは転換点です我々の街で電気が使える様になる様に、
またはベルリンの壁崩壊の様に  英語はより良い未来への 象徴です
世界に共通の問題を解決する為の言語が  あるという未来です。
