公的英語教育の成果(特にアジア諸国）

日本の英語教育について、友人の台湾系アメリカ人女性モニカ（長年ロスアンゼルスに住み、情報通信会社の管理職として英語と中国語両方を流暢に操る）のあっと驚くメールのメッセージをシェアします。私は正直公的英語教育が完全に失敗しているのは日本だけかと思ってました。　　

You see most non-English spoken people (not just Japanese but also tons of Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean and many more other ethnic groups) would remain very limited in the comfortable manipulation of English language even decades after they have lived in the US and I found that very sad and not acceptable. 

確かに私の経験でもたとえ、アメリカに何十年もいたとしても、英語が流暢ではないアジア系の人たちは、結構いたように思います。

Because how can you live your life fully with joy when you can’t even communicate freely in the language where your daily life commends for? 

That’s why I believe learning both English and Chinese is very important in our lifetime because knowing these two languages would mean that you’ll be set for life to communicate with nearly half of the world population (more than 2 billion using English and another 1.4 billion using Chinese). 
I mean I genuinely don’t like Chinese because I see myself as Taiwanese and American who has nothing to do with lots of no manner Chinese, but like it or not I recognize the fact that none of us should ignore this country anymore just by the sheer size of its huge population and the enormous economic and military power it possesses.

 

そうか、英語教育がうまくいっていないのは日本だけではなかったんですね。
英語に加えて中国語ができたら言うことないですけどね...まずは共通語の英語、英語。　
　

さらに、近いうちに台湾にぜひ行きたいとコメントしたら、

 If you want to see the real Taiwan and enjoy the hospitality of friendly Taiwanese, you need a tour guide who speaks Taiwanese because English is like Greek to the average Taiwanese despite the fact that we were forced to take English course since junior high (10 years if you include 4-year college) because the English education in Taiwan has been a failure through and through since 1949. 
Not to kid you, but I did not learn English from school at all because you can get perfect score and yet still don’t know anything about English being educated in Taiwan. 

ちょっとこれは日本と同じ現状では？　
なぜこんな似たようなパターンになっているのしょうね。　

 

I learned English through watching American and British TV, movies, cartoons and listened to the broadcast of Voice of America, BBC and pop music ever since I was just 12 years old. 

Trust me this is the easiest and most fun way of leaning a second language.

これは全く私も同感。　
理屈というより本能が自然とそちらを選ぶという感じでしょうか。　

これだと断然早く上達すると私は思うのですが、なぜかうちの主人をはじめ、男性はほんとうにおかたい左脳的アプローチがお好きのようで。ちなみに主人は岡倉天心の茶の本（英文収録）という本を読んで英語を勉強するのがおもしろいとのこと。　
男性は謎だ。。一体どうしたらそんな勉強法を思いつくのだろうか。。。
たまには女性的観点から英語にアプローチしてはいかがしょう？

ちなみに私の最近のおすすめはＢＢＣドラマのSherlock。これはおもしろかったですね。

このおかげでイギリス独特の皮肉とかユーモアも学べたし、いやいやとにかく楽しく学べますね。

シーズン3はまだ公開されないかな？

このドラマのおかげで仕事でもイギリスの担当者とも仲良くなれ、いいことづくめです。
