Observation about Japan

Recently, my friend Monica gave me an email describing what she has observed in Japan.
Let's take a look at our country from a different(Monica's) perspective.

I had a good time meeting you in Tokyo on that Hato bus half-day tour.
Really appreciate your sparing time with three of us.

I really enjoy visiting Japan every time because it's so clean, organized and quiet everywhere.
You don't hear people doing the honking while driving.
In addition, people are genuinely polite and honest.

Best of all, you don't need to pay tips no matter where you go.
One odd thing about Japan is that you don't see garbage containers
on the streets or anywhere in public places except in the airport.

Yet, I couldn't find one garbage being thrown away anywhere except some cigarette butts occasionally.
I noticed that most cars on the road are very small and kind of cute to me.
But, it does require great skill to drive in Tokyo.

Even as a skillful driver, I'm not sure if I can do that in Japan properly.
Unlike what I've seen everyday in southern California, nearly every car on the road in Japan is washed clean and kept in good shape.

Also, all the vegetables and fruits sold in the supermarkets of Japan look so clean, super big, very physically attractive and nicely wrapped.
You just can't help, but feel like eating those sexy things right away.
This reminds me of those fruits that I saw in the supermarket of Mexico long time ago.
Man, they looked like nothing but some dying old farts barely clinging to life.
I totally lost appetite seeing those ugly fruits in Mexico City.

Food is one of the great attractions of Japan.
They are not only full of varieties, but also very yummy and fresh.
I had the best Sushi and Sashimi this time.

Monicaは自分が清潔好きで整理整頓の達人なので、日本のCleanでOrganizeされたところが大好きです。
日本は本当にゴミがほとんど道路に散らかっていなくて、きれいだと感心していました。

Monicaはロサンゼルスでは毎日数時間かけて車で通勤しています。
Monicaが運転する車に乗せてもらったことはないので、運転の腕はわかりませんが、
メールを読むとかなり運転に自信があることがわかります。（a skillful driver)
そんな彼女でも日本でちゃんと運転する自信はないようです。
東京の高速道路が運転できる人は世界で通用するのではないでしょうか？

日本の食についてはほんと世界で注目されていますね。
アメリカのむちゃくちゃな食生活を経験した私は　
日本食が毎日食べられる私たちは「セレブ」だなあと思います。

ところで、今度は私が逆にMonicaと出会ったカリフォルニアで生活をしていく中で
観察した日本人や日本文化についてのまた違った角度での考察についてみなさんとシェアしたいと思います。　　

私が家族で住んでいた場所は、サンフランシスコに近く風光明媚なところでした。
またシリコンバレーがあるサンノゼにも近く場所がいいので、日本人駐在員の家族がたくさん住んでいました。
そこにはちょっとした「日本人村」が出来上がっていました。
中には「日本人村」から一歩も出ず、5年間自分の自宅の周辺だけで生活した人もいます。
こういう「日本人村」にどっぷりつかっている人はもちろん、何年アメリカにいても英語をしゃべれるようにはなりません。
当然のことです。日本人とだけ交流し、日本語のテレビを見て、家の中にいるか、
日本人だけの集団で旅行したりして生活しているのですから。　

私も「日本人村」とのかかわりはもちろんあったのですが、狭い村社会で話されるのは
相変わらず人の噂話が主で私にとっては息苦しくてたまりませんでした。
みんな平等主義が浸透しているのか自分と違ったことをしている人たちに異常に嫉妬をし、
あの手この手で足をひっぱり合う姿は、人間としてどうだろうかと思わざるを得ませんでした。
私はこういう「日本人村」からは喜んで離れることを選択し、現地での数多くのボランティア活動を
通じて現地の人たちと積極的にかかわり、新しい生き方、フロンティアを開拓する道を選んで生活しました。
そのおかげで、アメリカの素晴らしいボランティア精神とフロンティア精神を自分の中に取り入れること（Internalize)ができました。

日本社会では抑圧されて、活性化することのなかった遺伝子が活性化したのか、精神的にも自由になれ、複眼的に物事を見る習慣ができました。
何より良かったのはこのVolunteer & Frontier spiritのおかげで、多くの素晴らしい人たちと出会えたことです。　
Monicaもその中の一人です。
日本にはMonicaが教えてくれたように良いところもたくさんありますが、私は日本人はもう「日本人村」だけで生活する時代ではなくなったことを自覚し、もっと精神的なイノベーションが必要なのではと思います。
