根回しとは

今日は外国人に"Tell me exactly what Nemawashi is."

(根回しって正確にどういうことなんだか教えて）

と聞かれた場合の説明について考えてみたいと思います。

1.辞書でその定義を見てみました

■根回し■

元の意味は、木を移植しやすいように木の根元の回りを掘る庭師の作業のことを言う。

Originally the gardener's practice of digging around the root of a tree to make it easy for transplanting.

根回しは、正式決定に先立って、関係のある人たちから指示や同意を得るため、時には
裏から準備工作をするという意味になった。

Nemawashi has come to mean "spadework" to recruit support or consent,sometimes behind the scenes, from the people concerned prior to a formal decision.

コンセンサスによる決定が価値を持つ日本の社会では、根回しは、コンセンサス作りと、内部の調和を破る困った直接的な意見の対立を避けるために重要なプロセスである。

In Japanese society, where decision by consensus is valued, Nemawashi is an important process to achieve consensus and avoid awkward direct confrontation of opinions, which disrupts the internal harmony.

3. 自分が覚えやすそうな表現に加工してみました

いろんな言い方があるものですね。

でもこれだけ全部覚えることは難しいので、覚えやすいようにキーとなる言葉を加工してみました。

自分にとっては根回し＝behind-the-scenes maneuvering work to get a desired resultが覚えやすいかなと思いました。

あくまで個人的な好みとかイメージです。

こういうことは日本人に限らず、欧米人でもやっていますので、理解してもらいやすいかなと考えました。

ある人にとってはprior consultation for smooth decision making とかかもしれないしですね。

ここはCreativityを使ってその時その時で工夫すれば良いかと思います。

●desired result=望み通りの結果

●maneuvering= to manipulate or manage with skill or adroitness
                        (如才なさ、抜け目なさ、機敏さ)

でもこれではまだぼんやりした感じで、crystal clearとまでいきません。

私の経験では欧米系の人は"Clarify"(明確にしてください)という動詞を好んで使うようですので、
そう言われたら、具体的な例を教えてあげるとたいてい納得してくれます。

4. 現場で実際「根回し」の経験豊富な方に伺ってみる

→"It's already cooked"といったカジュアルな表現もあることを教えていただきました。
（もうすでに根回しされちゃってたよ→すでに遅し、という感じでしょうか）
