Mel: I see. Actually, NASA keeps warning us about the possible severe disaster around 2012 caused by solar storms since 2008.
There is an official report titled [ Severe Space Weather Events--Understanding Societal and Economic Impacts] by Dr. Tony Phillips of National Academy of Sciences.
The main message is that a century-class solar storm could cause billions in economic damage.

Keiko: I have no time for that. Just tell me what might happen if the solar storm hit the earth.

Mel: Well, according to the report, power grids may be more vulnerable than ever.
For example, all communications systems would go down.
That means bank systems, transportation systems, all the hospitals will go down.
That also means you can not use your cell phone, TV, PC, etc..
You could lose all your electric power at home for months.

Keiko: What???? That's a VERY serious problem!   But are you sure about the accuracy of the information?

Mel: I was pretty much convinced when the topnotch scientist Michio Kaku officially made his comments at Fox news.

個人的に真偽がずっと気になっている案件で、つい長くなってしまったのをお許しください。

私はNASAのサイエンスニュースというメールマガジンを購読しているのですが、先週土曜日（7月17日）に例文に書いた通りのことがメールに書いてありました。
すなわち「25カ国以上の世界で最も技術的に進んだ国の代表者が本日（7月17日）ドイツに集まり、1カ国では対処しきれない大きな問題についての話を聞く。その話というのは太陽嵐についてだ。」ということです。
え？？一体全体今何が起こっているの？？　もしかしてあのことが。。。。その背景はというと↓

NASAが招集した研究チームが作成した報告書というのは「激しい宇宙気象――その社会的・経済的影響の把握)」というもので、太陽フレアが放出するエネルギーが地球の磁場を混乱させ、強力な電流によって高圧変圧器が故障し、電力網が停止する可能性について検証したものです。（この報告書は公式のもので誰でもダウンロードすることができます。http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=12507）

この報告書はもしそのような大惨事が起これば、米国での被害額は「最初の1年間で1兆〜2兆ドル」にのぼり、「完全復旧には4年〜10年」を要すると報告書は予測していて、むろんこれは、地球全体に及ぶ被害のごく一部にすぎないそうです。
次に太陽活動が極大化する時期は2012年頃[2010年頃から2012年頃]と予想されており、このとき地球の地磁気シールドに、通常になく大きな穴が開くため、太陽フレアに対する地球の防御体制は弱まることになるとのことです。
